ARTIST STATEMENT LAURIE VESTØL, JANUARY 2023

Living on an island in the North Sea, Laurie Vestøl is an artist and landscape architect working across sculpture, printing, video, and site-specific performance. Change is happening in the archipelago and inside of the artist. Passivity, pain, symbiosis, and ecofeminism all emerge in the interplay between woman and fjord. Empathy among different species opens a deeply personal conversation, questioning the role of women as caretakers of nature. Kelp forests are disappearing, seabird populations are declining, and jellyfish blooms are increasing. Looking inside for answers, and engaging with nature starts a dialogue - who are we becoming?
