GLASS LAB

Skien, Norway

When: October 2020

Glass artist: Tuva Gonsholt

Science teacher: Kåre Høyer

Farm co-op: Tove Hoppestad

Filmmaker: Roger Bratseth

The glass lab investigates the first techniques for producing raw glass – observed in the year 3500 BC from Raku kilns on the beaches of Egypt. Glass beads were rare treasures, and used as amulets to hold evil spirits at bay. The goal of the glass lab is to connect to history, geography, chemistry, physics and arts to Klosterøya. Simple tools and ancient techniques will produce glass beads from sand and stone. High school students can design their own amulets. We will livestream the glass lab so that other educators and students can learn how to do similar experiments.
